Purpose

The purpose of the project is to implement some energy-saving and automation functions into the IEEE Lounge. The lounge often has its windows left open and its lights left on after people have left. This is a huge waste of energy and since the University of Delaware is trying to go “green,” we decided to try to improve the room's energy efficiency. By using an array of sensors including IR “trip wires,” vibration sensors, a PIR (passive infrared) motion sensor, and magnetic reed switches, we will be able to determine whether people are present in the room or not, and if not, the windows would automatically be closed and the lights would turn off.
